Iowa Wildlife Camps

Iowa Wildlife Camps We are an Outdoor Education Summer Camp that emphasizes place-based learning for kids ages 4-18. Currently Hiring Outdoor Educators for Summer 2024!

https://linktr.ee/iowawildlifecamps Wildlife Camps began in the summer of 1991 under University of Iowa Recreational Services with a mission to awaken an awareness and appreciation of the natural world in our campers, as well as to inspire campers to action through developing a sound “land ethic” (in the words of Aldo Leopold, a native Iowan). After recognizing the positive impact of a weeklong da

y camp, we began developing a wildlife experience for area schools. Providing this program for schools means more children will receive outdoor education regardless of their family’s financial abilities. Wild 2000, a weeklong camp for schools began in 1998. It was funded by a United States Environmental Protection Agency education grant and later by an Iowa Department of Education REAP Conservation education Program grant. This pilot led to the development of School of the Wild. In 2000, we became the first NCA accredited special purpose school, the first accredited environmental school in Iowa. The school experience is a week-long program in the fall and spring, and a two-day program in the winter. We offer Wildlife Camps in the Summer, and during Spring and Winter breaks for ages 4-17, depending on the camp. Most of our camps and School of the Wild sessions take place at Macbride Nature Recreation Area and Recreational Services facilities on the University of Iowa campus.

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate 35 years of Wildlife Camps last Friday! It was a great evening of looking at old camp photos, playing mushroom ball, and sharing stories around the campfire. A few of our raptor ambassadors made an appearance thanks to our friends at the Iowa Raptor Project.

We also wanted to extend a special thank you for the cookies & capri suns from Hy-Vee 🛒!

Week Three brought the heat! 🔥🔥 Even with the high temps, we still spent time outdoors stomping through creeks, building stick shelters, and cheffing up treats from foraged goodies (including the biggest puffball mushroom we’ve ever seen!).
