💧 Field Test for Biochar Quality: The “Sweat Test”

Want to know if your biochar is fully pyrolyzed? Try this simple field method:

1ïžâƒŁ Dry the biochar in the sun.
2ïžâƒŁ Once dry, place it in a gallon ziplock bag.
3ïžâƒŁ Keep the bag in a warm spot (but not direct sunlight).

If the biochar “sweats,” it likely isn’t fully pyrolyzed—meaning some organic material is still present. Just like a plant sweats when hot, unfinished biochar can do the same! đŸŒ±

Pro tip: Weight can also indicate quality when dry. If you have the same volume of biochar but different qualities in each bag, the not fully transformed material will be heavier than the fully pyrolyzed, higher-quality biochar.

This image shows a perfect example of the sweat test in action. A simple way to assess quality before adding biochar to the soil! đŸȘš

Around the world, companies are experimenting with biochar-based fertilizers to improve soil health, boost regeneration, and sequester carbon. 🌎

We’re joining the search—learning from these efforts, connecting the dots, and exploring how these ideas can support resilient, regenerative agriculture here in the US. đŸŒŸ

Biochar is only as powerful as the knowledge behind it. Every talk we give reminds us—there’s always someone new, always room to teach, and always ways to help biochar thrive in the soil. 🍇📚

That’s why sharing best practices matters: how to inject at depth, pre-charge with compost, and design trials that give biochar the greatest chance to make a difference.

💧 Same amount of water, same amount of biochar
 but different quality biochar.

The result? Different water retention, absorbency, and levels of residual run-off.

BIOCHAR QUALITY MATTERS! đŸŒ±

This experiment used the three samples we posted about last week.

The correct order from best👍 to worst 👎for that experiment was 2 → 1 → 3, and the water filtration results clearly show how quality impacts biochar’s ability to hold water and support soil health. đŸȘšâœš

Pyrolysis ≠ burning. đŸȘš

If done correctly, the material should never touch an active flame. The word “pyrolysis” comes from the Greek for “to transform by fire”—not burn!

This image shows pyrolized straw. Notice how it holds its structure? If it had touched a flame, it would have turned to ash. Instead, it was thermally transformed—pyrolyzed, not burnt. That’s how biochar should retain its original form! đŸŒŸâœš
We wish we knew who to attribute this sample to, but alas, it remains unknown.

Biochar by design 🔬

Inside each of our slow pyrolysis units, a network of precision air and water nozzles helps us manage what we call the “flame bubble”—the heart of the thermal reaction. By fine-tuning airflow, we can adjust the temperatures, oxygen levels, and retention times, allowing us to create biochar with tailored properties for different soils and applications.

This isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s biochar by design. ✹

Real carbon removal doesn’t vanish in a decade. ⏳

Biochar locks carbon away for thousands of years—making it one of the most durable, traceable climate solutions available today.

But we’re not stopping at carbon sequestration. We’re focused on regenerating soil, restoring ecosystems, and reshaping agriculture for long-term resilience.

This isn’t just carbon removal—it’s system change. đŸ’Ș

Big Ag has big power. Let’s use it for regeneration. đŸŒ±

Large-scale producers are uniquely positioned to scale regenerative practices—especially when it comes to implementing biochar at meaningful volumes.

With the right partners and tools, biochar in agriculture can become one of the most powerful methods of carbon sequestration on earth.
