Good morning from MVP 😊

KPBSD Program Coordinator Kelly King is welcoming attendees to Alaska’s annual statewide McKinney-Vento Conference, bringing together participants from 25 school districts across the state!

Kelly, along with MVP staff member Nicole Murphy, serves on the Alaska Department of Education’s Homeless Education Advisory Team (HEAT). Both also serve as mentors through the Statewide Liaison Mentorship Program, helping support and strengthen the work of McKinney-Vento liaisons all across Alaska.

MVP is proud to be part of this effort to grow awareness, strengthen best practices, build meaningful connections, and create supportive communities for all Alaska students 💙 💛 💙

A huge shout-out to Kelly King for 18 incredible years of running the McKinney-Vento Program for KPBSD. She started her work as the Coordinator on 8/13/2008 and is starting her 19th year in this role today.

Words cannot fully capture the kind, generous, and loving person she is.

This program has grown in amazing ways under her direction and shines because of her heart, dedication to this community, and countless years of hard work. Kelly has made a difference in more lives than she will ever know (it’s thousands), and I am so incredibly grateful to be a part of her MVP team.

The McKinney-Vento team HOPES (see what we did there? We were in Hope🤣) that each of you are enjoying a safe, happy, restful, and adventurous summer.

We will all be back in the office full-time soon, ready to work with our amazing students, families, and community partners. Our hearts are dedicated to this program and the children and youth we serve.

MVP staff Nicole Murphy spent the day today at Family Fun in the Midnight Sun in Nikiski, engaging with so many awesome families, youth, and community members. We are so grateful for the conversations we have and the positive relationships we form in our wonderful communities across the Kenai.

As we wrap up another school year, we want to thank our incredible community for the support, kindness, and generosity folks have shown the McKinney-Vento Program and the students we serve.

This school year we identified 282 students facing housing insecurity across the KPBSD - this is a 23% increase in identification from last year and we know with certainty that this number should be higher.

Behind every number is a child, a youth, a family, and a story. Because of donations from our community partners, our students had increased access to their education, clothing, food, school supplies, caps and gowns, and a variety of other reminders that they matter.

Thank you to everyone who helps us stand beside our MVP students and families. We are grateful for each of you and look forward to continuing this important work together.

📣📣 School Staff Spotlight 📣📣

MVP would like to highlight Kenai Central High School staff member Misty Hamilton. Misty is a trusted face - one of kindness, compassion, and humor for students and staff - and her dedication is an integral piece of the work MVP does for her school. She sends referrals, helps us communicate with students and families, keep us posted on student need, is a strong advocate at the site-level, and helps celebrate every win for our shared kids.

A heartfelt “thank you” to Peninsula Radiation Oncology Center and their generous donation to the McKinney-Vento Program. PROC has been a consistent supporter of the program and the work we do to remove barriers for unhoused children and youth across the KPBSD. We appreciate their efforts and all the ways they give back and build into our wonderful community.
