What you can learn from the Christmas carol: Silent Night
Picture this: It's a cold Christmas Eve, 1914. The Western Front is usually nothing but noise. Gunfire that breaks the ears, shouting that scratches the throat, and the kind that never lets your shoulders drop.
I can imagine someone on that front was praying for a normal Christmas. Soldiers on both sides were far from home comforts, but many had a similar ache. I am sure, because I know I would be longing for home, or for the traditions that a "Normal Christmas" would bring.
I know celebrations could be the last thing on a soldier's mind. But it's hard for me to imagine that they didn't know what day had come.
The loud sounds of the trenches could have been the loudest to date, but it didn't matter, because suddenly the front heard nothing.
The world went quiet. Not because the war is finished, there was no peace treaty signed by world leaders. No one was suddenly safe and able to lay down their arms and go home.
But according to reports, it was because someone started to sing.
From the German trenches, British soldiers hear carols drifting across the cold night air. Some troops had set up small Christmas trees with little lights. And then a melody carries across the space between them that the other side knows by heart.
Silent Night...Holy Night, or really, the German version with the words "Stille Nacht."
Different language. Same song. Same ache in the chest of longing for peace.
When the singing ended, something changed. Men who have been told to see each other as the enemy begin to respond like humans again. In some places, soldiers climb out of the trenches. They meet in the open. They trade small gifts. They talk. In some areas, they even help bury the dead. They played games, not caring who won the game or the war. All that mattered was that they all felt a simultaneous joy. They all experienced a faithful Christmas Miracle in action.
Of course, the night ended, and the next day came, and the war continued.
Nothing changed... or did it? Someone experienced their last Christmas that year. Someone sang a carol about the birth of a savior with an "Enemy".
Someone played soccer with a man he saw in his crosshairs just hours before. And many had language barriers that prevented verbal communication.
But somehow peace surpassed all of that. Peace surpassed all our understanding.
To go from a war to peace in such a sweet moment and a small amount of time had to impact all those on the battlefield in a way that no one could imagine.
I think about the power songs and music have in humanity, and this story always comes to mind as a powerful example.
Silent Night is not about pretending life is easy. It is about what can happen when peace shows up in the middle of something hard. It is proof that even in the darkest seasons, hearts can still soften.
If you are carrying a lot this Christmas, let this be your reminder. The most meaningful moments are many times the quiet ones.
If you want the kid-friendly version of this story, plus a simple lesson and sing-along you can do with your children, listen to
