KPC Community,

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gary J. Turner, Director Emeritus, Kenai Peninsula College.

Gary devoted nearly two decades of exceptional leadership to KPC, serving from July 1, 2002, until his retirement on August 12, 2021. He brought thoughtful experience in leadership, management, and university administration to a role that encompassed the Kenai River Campus in Soldotna, Kachemak Bay Campus in Homer, and extension sites in Seward and Anchorage.

His transformative vision shaped KPC into the thriving institution it is today. Under his guidance, the college launched innovative academic programs and became a state leader in online education. Gary's tireless advocacy secured approval for the construction of the KRC Residence Hall and the Career and Technical Education Center in 2013, facilities that continue to serve students, the local community, and Alaska.

Gary's profound influence extended far beyond campus boundaries. He chaired the UA Statewide Community Campus Director's Council for over 15 years and represented all community campuses on the university's Summit Team. His commitment to public service included 12 years on the Alaska Select Legislative Ethics Committee, where he served as both chair and vice-chair. He was recognized as Soldotna Person of the Year by the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce in 2012 and was awarded UAA’s Meritorious Service Award in 2021.

Gary cared for each and every individual of the KPC community, sending thank you notes on each employee’s employment anniversary, creating celebratory moments on KPC achievements at events like convocation and graduation, and promoting innovation in curriculum and delivery methods that emphasized student success.

Even in retirement, Gary remained dedicated to the Kenai Peninsula community he loved, continuing to serve on boards and in community roles. His work made the college and community a better place, and his impact will be felt by every student who walks through KPC’s door.

Gary J. Turner's legacy of vision, dedication, and genuine care for others will endure in the lives he touched and the institution he built. He will be profoundly missed.

Personal Note from Paul......

Gary was the College Director who hired me 21 years ago to develop the KPC Paramedic Program. He was not only my director, but also a trusted mentor and friend. Gary introduced me to the world of academia and consistently supported both me and the program as I grew into my role as a program director and faculty member. His leadership, belief in people, and commitment to student success had a lasting impact on my career and on the many students we serve. I will always be grateful for his guidance and support.
