The Redemption Tribe took 1st place at the Alaska State BJJ Tournament on February 14th.

This was an adults-only tournament, and our team showed up ready to leave it all on the mats. I couldn’t be more proud of the effort, hard work , and heart everyone displayed on the mats.

As a coach, I am just incredibly thankful to be part of this group. Watching the Tribe step out there, support one another, and grow through the experience means more than any trophy.

Grateful for this Tribe and the opportunity to be a part of it!

Thanks to the Alaskan Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation for putting on such awesome events!

What is a Shark Tank (or “Tanking” someone)?

It’s a traditional rite of passage in the Redemption Tribe along with many other gyms.

Typically — with a few exceptions — before you receive your next rank, you get “tanked.” Not the kind of “getting tanked” that some people imagine. You’re placed in the center of the mat for about an hour while teammates rotate in continuously, rolling with you nonstop. Everyone waits their turn, and many get more than one round with you. There are no breaks.

After a full hour of constant rounds with the entire Tribe, you’re then strapped with your next rank.

At Redemption this rite of passage is mandatory up to purple belt. After that, it’s optional and done upon request.

People who go through this don’t chase belts or ask for promotions. They simply show up, work hard, stay consistent, and maintain a genuine desire to learn. When the time comes, the mats speak for them through their knowledge and technique.

This pic shows those who were tanked and those who participated in this rite of passage last Monday.

The Redemption Tribe is an amazing group of people!

We are proud to share that one of Redemption’s Law Enforcement liaisons, Brendon, recently earned his purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!

Although his scheduled promotion on Friday was delayed due to a canceled flight, we made sure to make it happen Monday — complete with a well-earned shark tank. Brendon was officially strapped into his purple belt, a rank he earned through dedication, discipline, and countless hours sweating on the mats.

We’re proud to have him as part of the Redemption Tribe and grateful for the example he sets both on and off the mat. Congratulations, Brendon!

Professor Adam McClure
Professor Mae Britton
Brown Belt Brayden Storms
Brown Belt Jennifer Chircop
Purple Belt Pam Arndt

These individuals never asked for a belt — they only focused on earning it. Tonight their promotions reflect years of dedication, consistency, humility, and hard work on the mats.

Thanks to Professor Ryder for dealing with the chaos to get here and be a part of this monumental day for Redemption!

It’s a big day not just for them, but for the entire Redemption Tribe.

Monday (at their request) we tank em! Be there!

“The belt does not matter.”
It’s a phrase you’ve either heard — or will hear — on your journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. And I agree with it.

What people often miss, though, is that what does matter is who the belt comes from and how it was earned. Most black belts spend 15 years or more of consistent training to reach that level. Tonight, we’ll be awarding two black belts who each have about 15+ years of dedication behind them — and the key word is consistent.

Yes, you can ask for a belt.
You can be awarded one because your coach likes you.
You can even get promoted based on tournament success or competition results.

But nothing compares to truly earning a belt through dedication, steady training, humility, and a constant pursuit of knowledge.

Tonight is going to be a great night for Redemption. Not only are we promoting two new black belts, but also two brown belts and two purple belts. It’s a night worth celebrating.

Looking forward to seeing everyone coming out to support the Tribe! Family, friends and training partners alike!

One Tribe!
