"Active Listening: the receiver tries to understand what it is the sender is feeling or what his message means. Then he/she puts his/her understanding into his/her own words (code) and feeds it back for the sender’s verification. He/she feeds back only what the he/she feels the sender’s message meant—nothing more, nothing less."

Many parents spend a lot of time and energy trying to resolve their children's arguments and fights for them.

However, the only people who can effectively resolve a relationship problem are the people in that relationship.

In PET, you learn that the key to effective handling of sibling conflicts is for the parent to accurately perceive that the children own their relationship and to use Active Listening (and other assisting skills) as a facilitator - a mediator between the children to help them resolve their own conflicts. 😊😊

If we had a dollar for every time we felt better when someone told us to get over it, we'd be broke.

These two would be having an ENTIRELY different conversation if they learned to Active Listen and how & when to send I-Messages.

When you respond to your child's problems by Active Listening to them, they will begin thinking for themselves. They will start to analyze their problems on their own and eventually come up with their own constructive solutions—helping them become more self-responsible and independent. 🙂
