What began last school year as a new Business and Entrepreneurship program has become one of the most hands-on learning experiences on the SFC campus. As SFC celebrates the first day of the new school year, students are reopening The Landing Cafe and The Flight Deck campus store: two student-run businesses that make SFC one of the few high schools in San Diego to operate on-campus businesses led entirely by students.
“In this program, they are learning how to have a growth mindset, how to have grit, how to seek out opportunities,” said teacher Sonia Sturgeon. “In the end, they will learn how to make those opportunities into a viable business.”
After months of preparation, students opened The Landing and The Flight Deck last January. Since then, students have taken on real responsibilities, from creating merchandise and making lattes to managing inventory, finances, marketing, and daily operations.
Today, the businesses are staffed and operated by students during the school day, allowing them to apply what they're learning in class to business operations.
Logan Moran, class of 2026, said: “It has been amazing to see our hard work behind the scenes become a reality. I’ve learned a lot about teamwork, problem-solving, attention to detail, and the importance of taking initiative.”
The store will sell SFC merchandise and branded apparel, featuring brands like Vurori and ALO. The coffee shop will sell handcrafted lattes, cappuccinos, and matcha in partnership with Vista Bean, a local nonprofit roaster.
The Business and Entrepreneurship program has been a long-standing dream for SFC. For nearly 50 years, SFC has encouraged students to take initiative, think creatively, pursue opportunities, and use their gifts to make a difference. That entrepreneurial spirit can be seen in traditions such as Senior Business Week, a capstone experience in which seniors partner with local businesses to sell products and services to the community and alumni for one week at the end of the school year.
This year, SFC is building on that foundation with the next level of the program, giving students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of business while continuing to operate The Landing and The Flight Deck. They’ve also taken their creativity to social media, producing promotional content that showcases their businesses and connects with the SFC community. Follow along with The Landing Cafe and The Flight Deck the year to see these student entrepreneurs in action!
