Fusion Academy in Solana Beach, CA is Fusion’s very first campus, founded by Michelle Rose Gilman. Fusion Solana Beach is a private school where classes are one-to-one: one student and one teacher per classroom. Our Teacher/Mentors can personalize curriculum and pacing for their students’ strengths, interests, and learning style. Students may attend full-time for middle and high school or part-time with classes for credit, tutoring and mentoring, post-secondary counseling, and more. We offer rolling enrollment so students can start at any point, even mid-semester or mid-year.

In conventional schools, motivation often comes from external pressure — grades, competition, fear. But that kind of motivation is fragile. It exhausts students. 🥺

Real motivation comes from something else: knowing you have support. Knowing you can ask for help without judgment. Knowing someone is paying attention to whether you're actually succeeding.

When a student feels that, they stop pushing through obstacles and start solving them. And focus becomes possible.

When a student struggles in traditional school, the blame usually falls on the student. Lazy. Unmotivated. Not trying hard enough. 😵‍💫

But what if the problem isn't the student? What if it's that the system was never designed for how they learn? One lesson, one pace, 30 kids — that's efficient. But it's not effective for every learner.

For 11 years at Barnstable Academy, Jeff has been doing something rare: he's built a classroom where curiosity is contagious. Students leave his STEM classes still buzzing about experiments and discoveries.

But Jeff's impact ripples far beyond his classroom. He opens his door to colleagues. Leads professional development. Mentors teachers. Organizes the school events. And after the bell rings? He's hosting game nights, building community.

Every day, Matt makes a difference in the lives of students at Fusion Academy Solana Beach.

As our most veteran teacher, Matt has been part of our campus for 23 years. For more than 2 decades, he's helped shape the lives of countless students with his dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to learning.

A longtime Encinitas local, Matt brings the same calm, steady presence to the classroom that he finds out on the water as an avid surfer. When he's not at Fusion, he's busy keeping up with his five boys at home - a role that brings even more patience, perspective, and heart to the work he does with students each day.

Whether it's working with a struggling learner, a highly motivated student, or someone facing challenges outside the classroom, Matt adapts, supports, and persists.
