Dear Solana Vista Families,

Last Saturday we held our second Beach Bash, a very fun event sponsored by the Solana Beach Schools Foundation, which supports many of our Discovery Lab classes STREAM and the PE, science, art, Peaceful Playground and technology programs at our school. This year under the outstanding leadership of Mary Dodd we exceeded our goal and raised over $80,000, which will be divided equally between Solana Vista and Skyline. A very special thank you is in order to Mary and the following team of volunteers who worked many hours behind the scenes to make the evening fun, lucrative and successful:

• Julie Chambers for spearheading the Children’s Art and the Beach Bash Website
• Wendy Forrester and Jenn Levy for Live Auction, Raffle and Paddle Donations
• Melissa Clemens and Coral Johnson for Socials
• Malinee Kukkonen for Social Media and help with the Website
I would also like to thank the owners and staff at The Belly Up as well as Atomic Groove for their hospitality and wonderful entertainment.
As Mary Dodd stated so well, “I also want to underscore the positive goodwill this event has brought to our community which cannot be measured in dollars…I think we all needed a night to relax, enjoy the company of other parents & faculty and be so thankful for living in such an amazing city. We are truly blessed!”
Thanks to everyone’s hard work and generosity we can continue to provide some wonderful enrichment programs for the upcoming year. All of the students and staff at Solana Vista thank you for your continued support, and for helping to make a difference in the educational experience of our children.

Sincerely,

Lisa Platt

The Solana Beach School District hosted a booth at this years San Diego Festival for Science and Engineering. The event was a huge success. We had children submit projects that were showcased during the festival on Saturday at Petco Park. Thank you to all who attended, and for all the hard work our teachers and staff contributed to put together such a fun and special day of learning with science. We look forward to seeing even more growth in next years participation.

Our annual celebration of Read Across America (to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss) will be held the week of March 2nd. Returning again this year is the “100 Minute Reading Challenge for Families.” Give yourselves permission to set aside time in your busy day to give your children and yourself the gift of TIME TO READ. Instead of your children reading silently to themselves this week, we hope that you will take just 20 minutes each day of that week to read TO your children. Let them hear the expression in your voice, talk about new words, predict what will happen next, describe the characters, setting, and plot.

Here is a schedule of special events that will be happening during Read Across America Week:
Monday, March 2nd: We will celebrate the fun and wacky colors Dr. Seuss used in his book by having a “Mismatch Day”

Tuesday, March 3rd: Who-Ville Crazy Hair Day

Wednesday, March 4th: We will celebrate The Lorax by wearing whiskers and the color orange. We will also remember the message of The Lorax and be kind to our environment.

Thursday, March 5th: We will remember Dr. Seuss’s books “The Grinch” and “Green Eggs and Ham” by wearing green

Friday, March 6th: "Fox in Socks" Crazy Socks Day

As a culmination to our week, we will host a renowned storyteller, Marilyn McPhie. You can learn more about her by visiting her website at http://www.marilynmcphie.com. She will hold two performances in the Kiva on Friday, March 6th with TK/K and 1st grades at 11:50 and 2/3 at 1:00. We owe a special thanks to the PTA for funding this event!

Thank you for supporting literacy in your home! As Dr. Seuss said about reading………”Oh the places you will go!” Have fun!

There are many things to be thankful for at Solana Vista. One of them is all of the continued support of our children's education. Each year we have our staff, parents, and students complete a national survey to share viewpoints on key educational issues. Please take a moment {roughly 10-15 minutes} to fill out this Speak Up survey. Please forward or share with other SV families, Thank you! We hope all of our Solana Vista families enjoy a restful week off!!!! Happy Thanksgiving! http://www.speakup4schools.org/speakup2014/
