“Don’t step on the crack, or you’ll break your mama’s back.”

Do you know that game?

The one we played as kids as we jumped over the edges of the squares on a sidewalk or around the cracks in the playground cement so as to not send mama to the hospital 😉

It was a game of trying to only walk where things were smooth — and avoid where they weren’t to avoid something “bad” happening.

It’s was an innocent game then.
Until we became adults and started playing it on social media….

We play the game of posting about our kids’ big home run or our milestone anniversary with our spouse or that award our kid won or a picture of ourselves feeling confident coming out of the salon.

We don’t step on the cracks of telling how there was a huge family fight getting out the door to that baseball field.

We don’t step on the cracks of telling how we thought for sure another anniversary post would bever be written after that one fight we felt like we would never get through with our spouse.

We don’t step on the cracks of how we completely botched that parenting moment and wonder if that’s the one thing they’ll remember about their childhood.

We don’t step on the cracks of talking about breaking down on the closet floor among all the shirts that we felt unpretty in.

Instead, we walk where it’s smooth…

Friends — I knew back then that if I stepped on that crack on that sidewalk that lined my childhood home’s street … that when I came home my mom would still be standing upright.

I knew some person made up the saying.

Just like somewhere along the way someone made up this idea that we shouldn’t step on the cracks in our lives when posting to social media. Or when going to work or having conversation with friends… because something “bad” could happen.

So, instead — we walk where it’s smooth and pretty and appealing.

But friends, we all have cracks. So why are we playing this make-believe game of perfection?

Let’s leave the make believe games to the kids.

Let’s instead be ok stepping on the cracks,
And be ready to catch each other when we are willing to admit we are a little broken.
