NMT researchers Caitano da Silva, Logan Baeza, Jacob Wemhoner, and Saulo Orizaga are taking a closer look at the physics behind lightning’s return stroke—the intense surge of electrical current responsible for the flash, thunder, and many of lightning’s real-world impacts. Their work offers a new way to understand how these powerful currents form, travel, and fade.

A compact set of physical equations delivers a unified, first-principles explanation for how lightning's most destructive surge of current is born, races towards the clouds, and fades.

Congratulations to Dr. Jiakai Khang, Assistant Professor of Management at , who just had an article published by the Scottish Economic Society in its Journal of Political Economy. In this paper, Environmental Policies and Wage Inequality: Evidence From China’s Low-Carbon City Policy, Dr. Khang found that China’s Low-Carbon City Policy reduces the executive–employee pay gap, primarily by raising wages for rank-and-file employees. Dr. Zhang also believes that the results point to workforce restructuring toward more skilled workers, greater green investment, and higher compliance costs.

New Mexico Tech alumnus Dr. Srinivas Mukkamala, CEO and Founder of Securin Inc. and current New Mexico Tech regent (MS Computer Science 2002 and Ph.D. Computer Science 2005) has been appointed to the Forbes Technology Council!
