Classroom Must Haves and Management Tips

I resent sat with a first year middle school teacher really struggling with classroom management. So my first question for her was, “What is causing the most problems in the flow of your day?” Her answer was, students asking to go to the bathroom all of the time.

So we sat and brain skripted a new procedure to help her get control. We decided we needed a visual sign for student to indicate if it was an appropriate time to ask. We decided a simple laminated sign red on one side and green on the other. The kids know if it’s green they can ask, red means wait.

Later, at Walmart I just happen to see this sign. It’s sturdy, and easy for the kids to understand. I loved this, and it has made her classroom so much calmer.

🦆One of the best tricks I picked up in 15 years was to keep these rubber ducks in my room. So many uses!

1. I used them to call on students, by writing names on the bottom. The “lucky duck” answers the question, or did whatever was asked.

2. Classroom management, there duck sits on there desk if they can be quiet, as to not scare them. 😉

3. Sorting activities for classification lesson in science. “How could we put our ducks in groups based on what is similar.”

4. Creative writing prompts, have students write the origin story for their duck. Why are they wearing a costume? These were hilarious!

5. Counters for math.

6. Grouping kids. Example: “If your duck is wearing a hat, you will be in this group.”

7. The kids in my room fell in love with the ducks. They begged to play with them! So, as a whole class reward, I would allow 10 mins of free play with the ducks.

8. STEAM: The kids designed and home for their duck using only recycled materials. They built a model that supported each ducks individual needs.

The possibilities are endless! 🐥 And they are on sale. 😀
