The Snyder and Scurry County outdoor warning sirens are designed to alert people who are outdoors to potentially life-threatening weather or emergency situations.
Here’s what you need to know:
The sirens may be activated for:
• A tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service or a tornado observed by a trained spotter
• A severe thunderstorm warning with a considerable or destructive designation
• A wildfire threatening an area
Sirens may be activated automatically in response to National Weather Service warnings, or manually by local public safety authorities when conditions warrant.
What does the siren sound mean?
When activated, the siren head rotates and sounds for approximately 3 minutes before stopping. The sirens can be heard from approximately 1 mile away, although weather, wind, buildings and other conditions can affect how far the sound carries.
The sirens are designed primarily as an outdoor warning system. You may hear a siren from inside your home, but residents should not rely on hearing it indoors.
If you do hear a siren:
Go indoors immediately and check official sources for information and instructions.
Watch local television or follow the City of Snyder Office of Emergency Management (OEM) on Facebook for updates. NOAA Weather Radio is also an important source of emergency information.
The OEM highly recommends keeping a battery-powered radio available in your home in case severe weather or another emergency causes a power outage.
Remember: The outdoor warning sirens are one part of the emergency notification system. Stay informed through multiple sources and follow instructions from local officials. Sign up for local alerts at https://snydertx.gov/251/Alerts
