As Snyder’s own community college, Western Texas College (WTC) provides opportunities for education not only in Snyder and the surrounding communities, but also in Texas, the United States, and nations across the globe. Built in 1971 with strong support and by sheer force of will from the community, multiple generations of students from Scurry County and beyond have received a quality education. Students at Western Texas College enjoy a small-town, friendly atmosphere with a caring and approachable faculty and staff. Every semester WTC welcomes a diverse group of students from across the United States and beyond. Each year, graduates typically include students from over 20 countries. At Western Texas College, students of all ages experience a unique opportunity to meet new people and expand their horizons while achieving their personal and professional goals. WTC offers educational opportunities in several different ways to fit the college’s diverse student population. Traditional classroom learning with personal attention is available on the campus located at the end of College Avenue in Snyder. WTC also offers distance learning available online or through interactive television. In addition, WTC created College on the Square to meet the needs of people in the community. As the workforce training and continuing education arm of WTC, College on the Square offers many programs to develop the workforce and aid professionals who need to acquire additional training or knowledge in their fields. Businesses can qualify for free training for employees through grants available from College on the Square. WTC also furnishes an invaluable benefit to graduates of Scurry County high schools: free college tuition. The Opportunity Tuition Waiver at WTC aims to lay a solid, educational foundation at no cost for students who meet some simple parameters. In this vein, Western Texas College also boasts agreements with four-year universities for seamless transfers. In August of 2013, the Western Texas College Board of Directors approved a $15 million dollar renovation to the WTC campus. The renovation addresses ongoing issues with the age of specific, well-utilized facilities and equipment necessary to maintain the operation of the campus. The renovation includes multiple utility replacements and plaza repairs as well as building renovations of the gym, the Student Center, the Fine Arts building, and the grounds. People interested in starting or continuing their education should visit wtc.edu or call 325-573-8511.
