Kevin Jordan Beginner Ski Tips

Kevin Jordan Beginner Ski Tips January used to be Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. Everyday during the winter season is a great time to learn how to slide on snow. Why?

Check here for beginner ski tips, posted by PSIA-AASI National Team Member, Kevin Jordan. January used to be Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month (LSSM). This program was aimed at getting more people to try skiing, snowboarding, and winter sports. I was a member of the LSSM Leadership Team and an ambassador for skiing and snowboarding. I am still an ambassador for the sports and will be posting one ti

p a day for the entire month of January. Because what may seem simple to an expert or someone in the industry is mind-blowing to a beginner. For example, only wearing one pair of socks can really change someone's experience. Thus, the tips are aimed at beginners to help them get a leg up and inside knowledge of the sports. Kevin Jordan is a member of the PSIA-AASI National Alpine Team. He is on the Education Staff for the Professional Ski Instructors of America-Rocky Mountain Division and writes for 32 Degrees: The Journal of Snowsports Instruction and the NSAA Journal.

Tip #30: How to size ski poles

Take your height in inches or centimeters and 66% of that should be your ski pole height. For example, I am 5' 10" or 70 inches X 66% = 46.2 inches. I should ski with a 46 inch ski pole which is around 115 cm.

Tip #28: Check the weather

Plan on the first day out. If it is going to snow, be prepared with layers and goggles. If it is going to be sunny, be prepared with goggles, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Weather can change quickly in the mountains. Be prepared.

Tip #26: Pacing

Pacing is important. With kids and beginners, they may need more breaks. Sometimes it is more about the hot cocoa, the experience, than the actual skiing or riding. If we want to develop skiers/riders, be patient.

Tip #25: Gaper

Where the word comes from is up for debate. Some believe it comes from the "gap" between a skier's/rider's helmet and their goggles. Others believe the word came from "flatlanders" who came to the mountains and gaped in awe of their beauty. Either way, if you see a fellow skier/rider with a gap, help them out. People don't know what they don't know.

Tip #24: How to carry a snowboard

Put the base of the board against you and hold under the binding. Try to carry it more vertically in crowded spaces, you are less likely to accidentally whack into anyone.

Tip #23: How to carry skis

Vertically or over the shoulder. Use the brakes to help. Vertically, hold onto the brake under the other. Over the shoulder, use the brake of the bottom ski to prevent the ski on top from sliding forward. Hold the skis with the tips pointing forward and be careful when turning around.
