This is the third year of Maryland's Coast Agriculture Appreciation Week. Since you can't have Agriculture Week without farmers, the University of Maryland Extension Worcester County decided to host a couple of events specifically for area farmers. The first event was a Wildlife Damage Workshop taught by the UME Wildlife Specialist. The Snow Hill Lions Club generously allowed the meeting to be held at their Community Center. Many of the farmers in the area battle geese and deer damage. Farmers at this workshop learned about different strategies to protect their crops and manage the exploding deer and residential geese populations. Next up on Friday, prior to the opening of the fair, is the Calving Workshop, complete with a Bovine Birthing Simulator. If you have any questions about these or future workshops, email [email protected] or call 410-632-1972.

New World screwworm has been confirmed in the United States, making producer awareness and preparedness more important than ever.

To help sheep producers understand the risks and prepare their operations, ASI has developed a new printable resource outlining:

✔ What producers should do right now
✔ Signs of NWS infestation
✔ Ways to minimize risk
✔ Veterinary and treatment considerations
✔ Key contacts and resources

Rapid detection, reporting and treatment are essential to protecting your flock and preventing further spread.
