Big changes are coming for first-time drivers in Washington. 🚗

Starting January 1, 2027, most first-time applicants who are 18 will need to complete driver education before getting their license. The requirement will expand to another age group each year until it includes first-time applicants under 22 in 2030.

In other words, waiting until 18 will no longer automatically mean skipping driver’s ed.

If you or your teen may be affected, now is a good time to learn how the new requirements will work:

Good news: Washington’s estimated traffic deaths dropped **26.4%** during the first three months of 2026, from 148 to 109. That is real progress worth celebrating. 🙌

But we’re not coasting yet.

We’re still in the **100 Deadliest Days**, the stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day when more than 30% of fatal crashes involving teen drivers occur.

Let’s keep the numbers moving in the right direction:

📵 Put the phone away
🚗 Follow the speed limit
✅ Buckle everyone up
🔑 Always plan a sober ride

Safe choices add up. Let’s make the rest of summer count!

Properly adjusted mirrors give you a wider view of the lanes beside you and help reduce blind spots.

Parents, try this on your next practice drive:

Choose one skill before you leave. It could be smooth stops, lane position, mirror checks or turns.

Let your teen concentrate on that skill during the drive. Give immediate corrections when safety requires it, then save the full review for the end. Constant instructions can overload a new driver surprisingly fast.

In 2024, 825 people were killed in teen-driver-involved crashes during the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

We still have several weeks of summer driving ahead. Before every trip:

⚠️ Follow the speed limit
