Parents often think college prep starts in high school. Experts from U.S. News, the University of Georgia, and Arizona State University say the foundation actually begins in middle school. Middle school is the time to foster intellectual curiosity through reading widely and asking questions; develop executive functioning skills such as time management, goal setting, organization, task initiation, note-taking, and preparing for tests; and nurture character and leadership through volunteering and taking on small responsibilities.
Sixth grade is the time to address academic weaknesses before high school begins. Students should strengthen reading, writing, and math skills; develop study habits and organizational skills; learn time management and self-discipline; and explore their interests through clubs, sports, music, or enrichment programs.
By seventh grade, students should begin discovering subjects they enjoy and perform well in. Experts recommend taking honors or advanced classes when appropriate, beginning foreign language study if available, and developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Eighth grade is when the focus intensifies. Students should understand which high school courses will support their interests, consider Algebra 1 in eighth grade, and research high school options carefully.
Selective colleges do not consider middle school grades, but they do evaluate what students accomplish beginning in ninth grade. Middle school helps determine the trajectory students will enter high school on.
That said, parents don't need to turn middle school into a pressure cooker. Parents can encourage curiosity, let them explore different interests, and support academics while allowing them to grow socially and emotionally. The objective is not to raise a perfect middle schooler. The goal is to develop a curious, capable, and well-rounded young person who enters high school prepared to thrive.

Many people blame COVID for declining academic performance, but recent research suggests the slide actually began before the pandemic. According to NAEP and researchers such as Thomas Kane, reading and math achievement began to slow around 2015. COVID accelerated the decline, but it did not create it.
The more I read about the recent NAEP and Education Recovery Scorecard findings, the more convinced I become that there is no single explanation for the decline in academic achievement. Researchers have pointed to several possible factors, including increased social media use, chronic absenteeism, and reduced academic accountability and expectations.
A few findings that stood out to me:
1. Reading scores have fallen across virtually every demographic group.
2. The lowest-performing students have experienced the greatest losses, with some reading scores now lower than when NAEP first began collecting data in 1971.
3. In 2023, 31% of 13-year-olds reported that they "never or hardly ever" read for fun.
4. Math scores for struggling students have fallen to levels last seen in the 1970's.
5. Interestingly, high-poverty districts often recovered faster than middle-income districts from post-COVID learning loss due to targeted federal recovery funds.
The encouraging news? Research and school examples suggest that consistent reading practice still matters. There are states and school districts that pursued implementing academic reforms and did show improvements. Students improve when they are in school consistently. Students improve when they actually spend time reading. Students become better at math through daily practice and timely intervention. No single reform will solve everything, but maybe the basics still matter.

As a Boston College alum this caught my attention. Many people underestimate the role of alumni networks in certain careers. Success can happen at many schools, but some colleges open doors more automatically than others. One school may provide stronger internship access, alumni connections, and recruiting pipelines than another.
