Happy Thankful Tuesday!
Here are 10 Reasons we are thankful for our tutors and teachers:

#1: Dedication: Our Educators make sacrifices daily and are generous with their time, energy and resources.

#2: Hard Work: Early mornings and late nights are a regular part of most educators’ daily routines. Most teachers can be found working on lesson plans or grading assignments, even after their families have gone to bed at night.

#3: Selflessness: Whether it’s giving their lunch to a student who forgot theirs or using their own resources to purchase classroom supplies.

#4: Creativity: Educators are some of the most creative minds out there. They bring that creativity into the classroom in many different forms, in simple ways, like beautiful bulletin boards, and in more complex forms, like using creativity to make learning fun and individualized. We love this story of a teacher who uses hip-hop to teach science.

#5: Kindness: The heart of a teacher is truly unmatched. Encouraging notes on assignments and interventions with bullies are just a few examples of the kindness educators display on a daily basis.

#6: Multi-tasking: Educators aren’t just teachers, librarians, and administrators. They take on so many other crucial roles for the benefit of students

#7: Inspiration: Our teachers inspire students to be great.

#8: Encouragement: Educators set high expectations of their students and hold them to it, but not without a heavy dose of encouragement and support.

#9: Love of Learning: Educators instill a love of learning in their students because they are lifelong learners themselves.

#10: Impactful: Simply put, educators make a profound impact on the lives they touch.

Whether your school or district has high or low test scores, your Student/Academic Progress Rating says a lot about the effectiveness of the practices at a given school.

3 key reasons why student growth matters

1. Test scores alone don’t tell the full story.
Research tells us that test scores are closely associated with a student’s socioeconomic background. Taken alone, these scores may not tell us much about how well the school is helping the student learn. Test scores also reflect a single point in time, typically when students take their state tests in the spring. Finally, test scores cover a limited set of subjects in certain grades–usually reading and math and sometimes science. Put simply: Test scores alone don’t necessarily reflect how effective a school really is.

2. Student growth shows how well schools are meeting students where they are.
Experts believe that progress is a more accurate measure of the ways a school contributes to student learning. Because students start each year with different levels of knowledge or skill, measuring growth can shine a light on how well the school is helping each of its students learn, whether they are ahead of or behind their peers.

3. Differences between test scores and progress ratings can provide useful insights.
Schools with high test scores can have low or high progress ratings, and schools with low test scores can have low or high progress ratings. A school with high test scores but low progress ratings raises certain questions: How much are the test scores due to the students’ background? Are the teaching practices strong? A school with low test scores but a high progress rating tells a different story. This school has students that are starting at a lower point academically, but compared to all schools in the state, they are learning more. This is a good sign: It takes highly effective teaching to help kids catch up to their peers.

If you often feel "let down" by your child's behavior, perhaps you have unrealistic expectations. Parents who think in "shoulds" (for example, "My kid should be potty-trained by now") might find it helpful to read up on the matter or to talk to other parents or child development specialists.

Kids' environments have an effect on their behavior, so you might be able to change that behavior by changing the environment. If you find yourself constantly saying "no" to your 2-year-old, look for ways to alter your surroundings so that fewer things are off-limits. This will cause less frustration for both of you.

As your child changes, you'll gradually have to change your parenting style. Chances are, what works with your child now won't work as well in a year or two.

Teens tend to look less to their parents and more to their peers for role models. But continue to provide guidance, encouragement, and appropriate discipline while allowing your teen to earn more independence. And seize every available moment to make a connection!

How can you help your child get motivated in school?
According to the Child Mind Institute, here are are some ways:

1. Get Involved - Sometimes a conversation is better than interrogation
2. Use Reinforcement - There is nothing wrong with rewarding kids for good work.
3. Praise Kids for Following Through especially when things get difficult
4. Help them see the big picture
5. Let them make mistakes - you learn a lot from mistakes
6. Get Outside Help - Sometimes kids get tired of listening to their parents. However, they will listen to someone else tell them the same thing.

Happy & Excited Teachers make Happy Students!

Research shows that being around happy teachers can affect student's brains. At Addictive Math Inc, our teachers understand how various social interactions in the classroom impacts the behavior of students and their willingness to be attentive and open to learning.
Student motivation is further enhanced when others — peers, parents/guardians — acknowledge/recognize the student’s success. Having a personal connection with students, as well as the students being recognized for their successes, can lead to students feeling good about themselves. There is soooo much negativity in the world. Time for our students to be happy and successful :)

Distracted?
If you worked one-on-one with a teacher, how well do you think you would do? Our students get to work one-on-one with their homework, mathematics, science, reading or language arts.

Here are 3 benefits to working one-on-one
1. Student is heard and seen. They do not have to worry about other students because they are the only one.

2. Eliminates Distractions - When the focus is on the student, they can focus on learning. Most of us know that classrooms today have many distractions

3. Our teachers can easily gage the student's progress and ensure they have mastered the material.

“CHANGE IS THE END RESULT OF ALL TRUE LEARNING” - Leo Buscagla

Change involves three things:

Being dissatisfied with something - This can vary from person to person but in regards to our children, it can be that they know they can do better, are comparing themselves to others, or simply have a goal they want to achieve.

A decision to change that thing - This is usually the easy part because it just takes thought whereas the next step includes taking action.

A conscious dedication to the process of growth and change - This is usually the hardest part because it takes commitment. This is why tutors are great! They provide accountability, support, and endless encouragement!
