š® PS5 HDMI REPAIR ā WHEN A PREVIOUS REPAIR BECOMES THE REPAIR
This PlayStation 5 Digital Edition came to Sneads Ferry Tech Repair after the customer had already paid over $200 to another repair shop in Wilmington for an HDMI port replacement.
Unfortunately, the repair didnāt last.
Once I got the console apart and inspected the previous work, I found several problems that needed to be addressed before I was comfortable putting this PS5 back into service.
š WHAT I FOUND
The previous HDMI installation had multiple questionable solder joints, and several of the HDMI pins did not appear to have been properly soldered to their pads.
This is exactly why an HDMI repair canāt be judged simply by whether a new port is physically sitting on the board. There are 19 individual HDMI connections, and those connections need to be properly soldered and inspected.
The thermal side of the console also needed attention.
The PS5 uses liquid metal between the APU and heatsink rather than conventional thermal paste. When I opened this system, a substantial amount of that material had migrated into the surrounding foam barrier, and there was visible oxidation/contamination that needed to be cleaned up.
š ļø THE CORRECTIVE REPAIR
I went back through the previous work, removed the HDMI port, cleaned and prepared the area, and corrected the soldering.
The photos show the HDMI pads after cleanup and the port after installation. Each connection was inspected before the console went back together.
I also addressed the thermal interface, cleaned the affected area, and properly redistributed the liquid metal before reassembly.
And then came the most important part:
ā
TESTING.
The PS5 powered up.
The PlayStation logo appeared.
And we had a stable HDMI picture all the way to the startup screen.
Console back in service. š®
Iām sharing this because thereās an important lesson here:
The price of a repair doesnāt guarantee the quality of a repair.
This customer had already spent more than $200 and still ended up needing someone else to go back through the console and correct the work.
Microsoldering isnāt about making something look attached.
Itās about making sure the repair is electrically and mechanically sound, inspecting your work, properly handling the rest of the device while youāre inside it, and testing the finished product before it goes back to the customer.
Iām not posting the name of the previous business. This isnāt about publicly attacking another repair shop.
Itās about showing customers what Sneads Ferry Tech Repair means when I say I care about doing the job correctly.
If another shop has already worked on your console and youāre still having problems, that doesnāt necessarily mean itās beyond repair.
Second opinions are welcome.
