Empowering body and mind with Muay Thai.

I still get the don’t swing your arm when you kick brigade on my posts, so I thought I’d try and show the difference between the arm swing (or straight out) and the hands glued to your head. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The first thing you’ll probably notice, is how wide open you actually are when you try and keep both hands up while kicking. (Some people seem be under the impression it will protect you more). ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Keeping both hands up by your head prevents you from turning your shoulders in. This makes makes your upper body a very big target and easy to hit. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Then if you try to turn your shoulders in while keeping your hands up....you will actually pull your guard away from the opponent thus again leaving yourself vulnerable 🤷‍♂️⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It’s not as easy as you’d think to land a ko shot on someone who’s set the kick up, timed the kick and is executing it at full force. 😉⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Now, if you want to kick with your hands high by your head and it works for you, then cool. Just remember, every technique has a basic set of rules that must be followed. Once you’ve mastered those rules, then you can start adapting the techniques to fit the situation at hand. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Someone left a comment on one of my posts which I thought was brilliant. They said in their gym they’re taught “learn the rules well before you break them” 😉👍⁣⁣

Between 1990 and 1995, Ramon Dekkers faced 27 of the toughest Thai opponents. Although many of those fights ended in decision losses, they were five-round wars — and back then, beating a Thai on home soil was nearly impossible unless you scored a knockout. In an era when very few foreigners ever set foot inside the legendary Lumpinee Stadium, Dekkers carved his own path and opened the doors for future generations of fighters. Forever remembered — The Diamond! 💎

Empower Muay Thai has always been a passion project — a true mom-and-pop labor of love. Those two roots shaped how we responded when a major health issue threatened our ability to keep sharing authentic Muay Thai with everyone, no matter their experience or ability.

We took to heart the words of our coach, George Tsutsui: never give up.

So we’re adjusting, rebuilding, and refocusing. We’re scaling down to offer small-group classes and private training, while also bringing Coach Fred’s community programs to life.

It’s a new chapter — smaller, but full of heart. Stay tuned to see what we have in store. ❤️

Why Sparring Is A LIE 10/19/2025

The title is a bit misleading, but the content has some very good points. If you watch the Thais spar, they have a more playful approach, and they fight often. It is the hard sparring that can be a problem on many levels.

Why Sparring Is A LIE Something weird is happening in martial arts... The world's greatest fighters have stopped sparring. In this video I explain why, what they're doing instead,...

There are still venues in Thailand that fight with wraps only.

Muay Thai and its beginnings: back in the 1920s, the art was known as Kard Chuek, when fighters wrapped their hands with h**p ropes instead of wearing gloves. This ancient form of Muay Boran was raw and unforgiving, every strike carrying the weight of tradition and danger. Before modern rules and gloves were introduced, Kard Chuek represented the pure essence of Thai combat - strength, honor, and heart 🇹🇭
