Our Machine Tool Technology-TCAT Murfreesboro / Smyrna Campus class had the privilege of visiting Kennametal in LaVergne, Tn.

We have several current and former students that are employed at Kennametal.

Kennametal is well known in the machining industry for manufacturing inserts and cutting tools used worldwide by machinists.

Machine Tool Technology-TCAT Murfreesboro / Smyrna Campus said farewell to mid trimester graduate Lawson Brandon today.

Lawson will be continuing his machine tool technology training at Feintool in Antioch. He will be in a tool & die apprenticeship, and upon completion, he will receive his journeyman's card from the Department of Labor.

Best of luck Lawson. Go make us proud !!!!!

Thanks to Megan Mueller & Jacob Benton at NWI Aerostructures - Nashville for hosting our Machine Tool Technology-TCAT Murfreesboro / Smyrna Campus class on a tour of the facilities. We enjoyed learning about the technology used in machining airplane wings.

*Fun Facts* Jacob Benton (TCAT Hartsville alum) told me that 50% of the NWI - Aerostructures machining department is local TCAT alums. 👏🏼

NWI Aerostructures sells between 7-9 millions pounds of machined aluminum scrap.

An aluminum billet may go on a CNC Mill weighing 4000 lbs and come off weighing a mere 120 lbs.

With some reverse engineering and some 3D printing, we were able to reproduce this manual lathe gear for mere pennies compared to the manufacturer’s cost of $200.

We would’ve been down for days by the time we went thru our purchasing process and waited for the new gear to be shipped to us. But by utilizing our skills and resources, we had a new gear printed in 2.5 hours plus we will have spare gears printed for future break downs.
