“A BAKER’S DOZEN”

On a Sunday morning in early April I went to the Bagel Shop on Old Country Road. There were a couple of guys waiting in line and a woman who ordered “a baker’s dozen”. As people talked about the “virus”, she mentioned that she was a nurse in the “Covid Ward” at Huntington Hospital. The counterman, named Andy, said that he had a family member who was a doctor who stayed at this facility many nights to protect his family from infection. As the customers questioned the various outcomes of this tragic situation, the woman who wore a professional surgical mask said, “we’ve got this.” Hearing this I was overcome by the nurse’s courage and strong determination in the face of this global pandemic.
Andy brought out a big paper bag full of assorted bagels but refused to take any money from the nurse who offered to pay a few times. He said that he couldn’t accept any money from her followed by, thank you so much for what you do.” As she left the store all was quiet. I knew that she would return to work where she was given dozens of sick patients, with always an extra few thrown in … for good measure.
