The discovery of insulin in the early 1920s stands as one of the most groundbreaking medical advancements in history, offering a life-saving treatment for diabetes. Before insulin, a diabetes diagnosis, particularly for children with Type 1 diabetes, was often a death sentence. Patients were placed on strict, low-calorie diets to prolong life, but many still succumbed to diabetic ketoacidosis. In 1921, Canadian physician Frederick Banting, working alongside medical student Charles Best under the supervision of John Macleod at the University of Toronto, successfully isolated insulin from the pancreas of dogs. With the help of biochemist James Collip, the extract was purified, making it safe for human use. Their breakthrough revolutionized medicine, turning diabetes from a fatal disease into a manageable condition.
The first major test of insulin’s effectiveness came in 1922 at Toronto General Hospital, where diabetic children lay comatose with little hope of survival. As scientists administered the newly purified insulin, the transformation was astonishing. One by one, the children awoke from their comas, marking a turning point in medical history. This moment not only demonstrated the power of insulin but also symbolized hope for millions of people worldwide. Recognizing the significance of their discovery, Banting and Macleod were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1923. However, Banting was displeased that Best was not initially included in the honor and later shared his prize money with him.
In an extraordinary act of generosity, Banting, Best, and Collip sold the insulin patent to the University of Toronto for just $1, ensuring it would be widely accessible. Banting famously stated, “Insulin does not belong to me, it belongs to the world.” Their selfless decision allowed insulin to be mass-produced, saving countless lives over the past century. Today, insulin remains an essential treatment for diabetes, and the legacy of these scientists continues to inspire medical innovation and ethical responsibility in healthcare.
