ARIES was represented in the 2018 conference at www.sha.org with chairing a Disaster Risk Reduction and Cultural Resources session called
Title: “What you do not know can hurt you: The Intersection of Public Archaeology and Public Awareness of Climate Change Impacts”
For this symposium, the challenge is to review how disaster risk reduction research transfers to action and operations at multiple scales about cultural resource management (CRM) (e.g., government to global policy, emergency procedures, hazard mitigation and historic preservation plans, local training scenarios, disaster declarations, etc.). The contributors have experience with the intersection of historic preservation, risk reduction from hazards, and working with local communities, either organizations, schools, or government agencies, to implement cultural resource protection within disaster management frameworks. They provide examples of research and operations that includes CRM intersections with diverse hazards AND phases of emergency management (mitigation, preparedness, response, recovery). Discussion will include perspectives about how CCA (climate change action) intersects with DRR (disaster risk reduction) as it relates to community vulnerabilities and development decisions, especially related to cultural resources.

"Linking disaster risk reduction, climate change action, and cultural resource management for development"
Climate change has taken over a large part of the disasters and development agenda. In examining the theory and practice behind climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation (CCA), disaster risk reduction (DRR), and development, it is apparent that climate change offers little new. Climate change is one factor amongst many influencing hazards, to be factored into improved development alongside causal factors of the vulnerabilities which create disasters. This conclusion is reinforced by seeing that actions on the ground to deal with climate change mitigation and adaptation are actions which need to be implemented anyway for improved development. This is true for cultural resource management and its integration across DRR, emergency management and regional planning. Here, a theoretical and practical framework is proposed to better integrate these different sectors, especially by making climate change action a subset of wider development topics. Case studies of regional collaborations are offered.
