My oldest went to the USU preschool where it was entirely hands on learning. It's a great preschool, but it bothered me that (if I hadn't done it myself) my child wouldn't know his ABCs or any of the basics at all when he registered
for kindergarten. He didn't learn to hold a pencil, write his name or learn any of his sounds. I loved that the kids learned by doing. They had all the theme based activities around the classroom and the kids could go where they liked. My second child went to a preschool that was wonderful, but I felt like it was almost the opposite. She learned all the basics for kindergarten, but I wished that there had been more hands on learning. I structured my preschool in a way that I feel they receive both. They have all the necessities covered early on and we are able to progress quickly into harder topics like reading, addition and subtraction and so much more. We have fun themes that make school new and exciting each week. An example of one of those themes is "The Earth: Rocks, Fossils, Volcanoes and More!"
During this week we work on worksheets, but we also build a volcano and make it "explode". We break open geodes to see what's inside. We make fossils and build our own planet earths out of play-dough with all the different layers. I believe kids remember things better when they get to experience it. We make cookies during "Measurements" week, and we plan out a safety route to get out of our house during "Safety" week. I try to provide a balance of fun and opportunities where the children can do things for themselves at the same time as trying to prepare them for life in an elementary school where there is a lot of structure and routine.
