Event Spotlight: First Year Day of Service (FYDOS)

On Saturday, September 19, 2026, first-year and transfer students came together at the Smith Student Center Ballroom for the inaugural First Year Day of Service. Guided and led by the Haverlack Civic Scholars, volunteers packed essential care packages while discovering the lasting impact of community service.

The event delivered incredible results through teamwork and dedication:
- 𝟔𝟓𝟑 care packages packed for unhoused veterans and community members in need
- 𝟐𝟐 dedicated student volunteers
- 𝟑 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 of hard work and hands-on service
- 𝟓 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬 towards each students Civic Action Scorecard

Behind the scenes, the event's success was driven by the extraordinary vision and leadership of John Cosky, Haverlack Civic Scholars Coordinator, who coordinated the event. Special recognition goes to founder Stefanie Armstrong and S.H.I.N.E. (Supporting Hygiene in Need Everywhere), whose mission provided the foundation for the outreach. Attendees were also treated to an inspiring, recorded speech from Mr. Elliot Haverlack, who reminded students to "know people, let people know you" and encouraged them to embrace every step of their journey at Slippery Rock University.

Reflecting on the impact of the day, volunteer Desiree D’Ambrosi shared, "It was an amazing experience. Several volunteers and staff helped pack over 600 bags for veterans and others facing struggles in their everyday life. It was so nice to be able to help out the community, and to surround myself with others who also wanted to help." Student Peyton Powers added, "Packing hygiene products, food, and clothing into care packages for homeless veterans made me feel very good about myself and connected to my community," while Margaret Hughes noted, "This event had a genuine impact on all of the volunteers and showed how much we can accomplish when we work together."

This milestone day highlighted the incredible spirit of SRU's newest students while showcasing how collective effort brings immediate, meaningful relief to those who need it most in our local community.

Making a difference looks good on us! 📦

Here’s a look back at our very first First Year Day of Service (FYDOS)! Led by the Haverlack Civic Scholars, our amazing crew of 22 student volunteers brought the energy, spent 3 hours packing, and officially put together 653 care packages for unhoused veterans and community members in need.

Huge shoutout to John Cosky for orchestrating this entire day and making sure everything ran smoothly! Additional thanks to Stefanie Armstrong & S.H.I.N.E. and everyone who showed up to lend a hand and build community together.

Event Spotlight: PIE - Positive Impacts Everywhere

This week, the Honors College teamed up with the Center for Community Engagement (CCE) for an impactful event demonstrating how to incorporate the newly integrated Civic Action Scorecard into the Honors program.

Hosted by Dr. Willford and Colin Green in Bailey Library, students spent Tuesday afternoon spreading positivity across campus through random, intentional acts of kindness designed to uplift the community.

Participants packed goody bags and crafted personalized notes filled with encouraging messages and actionable ideas to help others continue spreading kindness.

Through their participation and attendance, students made a direct campus impact, enjoyed free food, and earned Civic Action Scorecard points to kickstart their community engagement goals.

Award Spotlight: Slippery Rock University Early Childhood and Elementary Music Community Engagement Initiative

On July 9, 2026, the Slippery Rock University Early Childhood and Elementary Music Community Engagement Initiative received the Outstanding Arts Integration & STEAM Initiative Award.

Presented at Creativity Connected in St. Louis, this national honor recognizes the initiative's collaboration with the SRU/SGA Preschool and Childcare Center, selected from an international pool of applicants.

Under the guidance of Dr. Cassandra Eisenreich, field experience students Quin Coltman, Travis Peters, Ian Fuechslin, Brooke Dougherty, Raven Ordona, and Elizabeth Hixon design music learning experiences that combine artistic expression with core developmental skills.

Dr. Cassandra Eisenreich noted that the partnership serves as a living laboratory, sharing that "music gives us a beautiful way to connect all areas of learning." Student Brooke Dougherty shared, "Being able to bring music to these young children every week taught me how powerful hands-on learning truly is," while Travis Peters added, "The fact that something as simple as that is nationally recognized is so overwhelming," emphasizing that "every child deserves the opportunity to experience music."

This award highlights the dedication of SRU student educators while showcasing how arts integration brings lasting educational value to young learners in the community.
