Halloween is right around the corner, so travel with us down to the most haunted city in America, New Orleans, Louisiana ⚜️

With such a turbulent history, New Orleans has known centuries of tragedy with epidemics, the trans-Atlantic slave trade, fires, and more. It is also home to Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau who became a key figure to the city’s spiritual landscape. As West African spiritual practices, Haitian voodoo, and Roman Catholicism blended, it created what we now call “Louisiana voodoo.”

SRU history major, Caroline Gannon, was able to experience this rich history while traveling for Fall Break. She stated that she loved learning the history of New Orleans from her U.S. Popular Culture class with Dr. Ford prior to her travels! 🎷

This morning, we were so happy to welcome students from Slippery Rock High School to learn more about our History Department and what being a student of history means.

Students were able to share what they have learned from our program from skills, workloads, and content to clubs, growing relationships, and becoming a part of the history family!

Thank you, Slippery Rock High School, for visiting us and we hope we see some history applications cross our desk…👀

History goes beyond the four walls of a classroom 🎧

Dr. Ford’s U.S. Popular Culture class takes the history of ragtime, blues, and jazz, and expands lectures into experiences. Students engage in “museum tours” where they scan QR codes to hear music, read impactful quotes, and analyze posters from the 1920s and 30s. They are then able to write down their thoughts on said pieces and relate it to the content being taught in class.

Shoutout to Dr. Ford’s U.S. Popular Culture class for designing such an interactive way of teaching and understanding history!
