During National Stop on Red Week, August 2–8, we’re joining National Coalition for Safer Roads and communities across the country in reminding drivers that every red light is a choice, and every safe stop helps protect lives.
Red-light running is one of the most preventable risks on our roads, yet in 2024, crashes involving red-light running killed more than 1,100 people and injured more than 141,000. Nearly half of those killed were pedestrians, cyclists, and people in other vehicles, not the drivers who ran the light.
That is why this week matters. Safer intersections require education, engineering, enforcement, and a shared commitment from every driver to slow down, stay alert, and stop on red. Red-light safety cameras and other proven safety strategies can help change behavior, reduce dangerous crashes, and make streets safer for everyone who uses them.
This National Stop on Red Week, let’s choose patience over risk and safety over speed.
