The Rockefeller Archive Center was established in 1974 initially to gat

her, preserve, and make accessible the records of the Rockefeller family and their far-reaching philanthropic endeavors, such as the Rockefeller Foundation, and Rockefeller Brothers Fund. The Archive Center has grown and today holds the archives of major foundations, cultural organizations, research institutions, and many individuals associated with these organizations. The Rockefeller Archive Center preserves and makes accessible its ever-expanding holdings, which include the records of over forty organizations and over one hundred individuals. It’s time to meet our bridal party in Wedding Week! The scrapbook lists out the bridal party members and provides detailed descriptions of the bridesmaid dresses and the flowers carried at the wedding. Included in the album are also some photos of Alta in some of the dresses from her bridal trousseau.

Tomorrow we’ll be back with photos and details of the wedding day itself!

Wedding Week continues! Let’s meet our bride and groom. We can see Ezra pictured, along with photos of his parents, and Alta, along with photos of Laura Spelman and John D. Rockefeller, Sr.

Another page of the scrapbook includes a note about the lavender gown that Alta was wearing when she became engaged.

Welcome to Wedding Week! This week we’ll be taking a tour of the wedding scrapbook of Alta Rockefeller Prentice, the middle child of John D. Rockefeller, Sr. and Laura Spelman Rockefeller.

Alta married Colonel Ezra Parmalee Prentice in January of 1901 and this scrapbook catalogues their courtship, engagement, wedding, and beyond. Tucked into the front cover is a typed list of Alta and Ezra’s dinners and outings before their engagement. Also tucked into the scrapbook are two receipts from a Viennese shop that could be purchases for Alta’s bridal trousseau. Glued into the early pages of the album are also invitations to meals, theater, and other outings from the couple’s courtship.

Stay tuned all week as we look at what was noted about Ezra and Alta’s engagement, bridal party, wedding, and honeymoon!

The first Black man to earn a PhD in botany here in the US was Jesse Jarue Mark, a Rockefeller Foundation Agriculture Fellow. Mark attended Prairie View A&M University, an HBCU in Texas, before earning his master’s degree from Iowa State University. He completed research on cold resistance in alfalfa for his doctoral work and was awarded his doctorate from Iowa State in 1935. You can still read his research online today!
