Today, we proudly recognize Maria Norton, a Cuban and Spanish Florida PTA leader from Homestead in Miami-Dade County.

Maria currently serves as Florida PTA Secretary, continuing a remarkable 24-year PTA journey that has included leadership at the local, council, regional, and state levels. She has served as a local-unit president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary; Miami-Dade County Council president; South Region Representative; and Florida PTA board member.

Maria made history as the first Cuban president of the Miami-Dade County Council of PTAs/PTSAs (MDCC), an organization serving the community since 1923. As the daughter of Cuban immigrants, she honors her parents’ sacrifices by working to create opportunities for every child and family.

A public-school speech-language pathologist, Maria is especially passionate about advocating for children with diverse needs and families whose voices often go unheard. Her service has also included Scouting, youth soccer programs supporting migrant children, and parent leadership within agricultural education.

💙 “I PTA because I want to make a difference in the lives of children and families, especially those whose voices are often unheard, and I believe in the power of parents, educators, and communities working together to create change.”

Thank you, Maria, for honoring your heritage through service and opening doors for others!

Today, we proudly recognize Izzabella Wilson, a multiracial youth leader from Jacksonville who proudly represents her Bolivian and Uruguayan heritage while using her voice to advocate for students and champion the arts.

Izzabella serves as the Youth Member on the Florida PTA Board of Directors and as Cultural Arts/Reflections Chair for the Duval County Council of PTAs. She now represents Florida on National Parent Teacher Association Membership Committee, bringing an important youth perspective to membership and engagement at the national level.

Named the 2024 Florida PTA Student Advocate Award recipient, Izzabella has brought a meaningful student perspective into spaces where young people are not always represented. She works to ensure students are not simply spoken about but are invited to participate, lead, and advocate for themselves.

A past National PTA Reflections winner, Izzabella understands firsthand how the arts can amplify student voices, inspire creativity, and create meaningful change. Now studying dance and psychology at Jacksonville University, she continues to combine her passion for the arts with her commitment to service.

💙 “I PTA because I want to support, empower, and inspire students through meaningful action.”

Thank you, Izzabella, for elevating youth voices, advancing the arts, and demonstrating the difference young leaders can make!

Today, Florida PTA honors Indigenous Peoples’ Day by celebrating the histories, cultures, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous peoples.

We encourage families to learn together, seek out Indigenous voices, and help children appreciate the diverse communities that shape our world. Every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and supported.

Today, we proudly recognize Alicia McGee, a Puerto Rican PTA leader from Dunedin and President of the Pinellas County Council PTA.

For 15 years, Alicia has poured her heart into PTA advocacy, working to improve the lives of marginalized children throughout Pinellas County, especially those who feel invisible, overlooked, or unheard.

Her commitment to belonging is deeply personal. Growing up between her Puerto Rican and Irish families, Alicia often felt that she was not fully accepted by either side and did not completely belong in either world. That experience shaped her determination to create spaces where every child feels valued and included.

As the mother of a child with disabilities, Alicia has become a fierce advocate for her son and for other children who need someone to recognize their strengths, understand their needs, and stand beside them. Her leadership reflects the belief that identity, background, or ability should never be a barrier to belonging.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, Alicia honors the Puerto Rican heritage that taught her to fight for inclusion, for her son and every child who has ever felt they did not fit in.

💙 “I PTA because all children deserve to be heard.”

Thank you, Alicia, for 15 years of courageous advocacy and for helping every child know they belong!

Today, we proudly recognize IIka Richardson, a Puerto Rican PTA leader, educator, and passionate advocate from Orlando in Orange County.

Ilka currently serves as Legislative Chair for the Orange County Council of PTA and is involved with Palmetto Elementary PTA. Her council leadership journey has also included serving as Vice President of Organization.

Throughout her years of service, Ilka has worked to ensure students have a voice and meaningful opportunities to participate in advocacy. She has helped students travel to Tallahassee, where they can experience civic engagement firsthand and learn that their perspectives matter.

Ilka is especially committed to reaching historically underrepresented students and addressing barriers affecting ESOL students and families. Through relationship-building, intentional outreach, and advocacy, she creates opportunities for students and families to become informed, engaged, and empowered.

As both an educator and PTA leader, Ilka understands that small actions can create lasting change for children and their communities.

💙 “I PTA because every child needs to be seen, heard, and taught that small actions leave a lasting impact.”

Thank you, Ilka, for empowering students, strengthening family engagement, and advocating for every child!
