To our SAMS 6th grade families - please don't forget about open house TONIGHT (August 25, 2026).

The York Team will be at 5:00 pm, and the Knox Team will be at 6:00 pm at SAMS. See you all there!

We will host a 7th grade open house later in the fall. Stay tuned!

Calling All River Hawk Alumni!

Did you graduate from MSAD 54 this year... 10 years ago... or even 50+ years ago? We'd love to reconnect with you!

No matter when you graduated or where life has taken you, your story can inspire the next generation of River Hawks.

We're looking for alumni from every graduating class and every career field who are interested in:
• Sharing their career journey with students
• Speaking in classrooms or at career events
• Hosting job shadows, workplace tours, or career exploration experiences
• Mentoring and encouraging students as they explore their futures

Whether you work in healthcare, education, manufacturing, construction, public safety, the military, business, the trades, agriculture, technology, the arts or any other field—your experiences can help students discover career pathways they may never have considered.

Every graduate has a unique story, and every story has the power to make a difference.

Summer Community Champion

A community champion is a person who collaborates with a variety of partners to strengthen school, business, and non-profit relationships for the benefit of the community and our students.

Skowhegan Area Middle School’s Summer Community Champion is Matt Keister!

Matt spends countless hours before and after school preparing for the alewives field trip for the 7th and 8th SAMS students. Some of his preparation includes organizing lessons with science and social studies teachers, setting up a presentation with a biologist for the students before the field trip, and connecting with biologists, dam operators, and non-profit organizations to plan a full day of events for every 7th and 8th grade student. This is all greatly appreciated and certainly well above and beyond!

Without him, our students would never experience the alewives trip. This is a monumental task--the planning, organizing and outreach to so many people to make this happen for our kids is nothing short of herculean.

Congratulations, Matt, we are so thankful to have you as a part of our community!

Mrs. Esty’s SAMS students turned into data analysts and safety engineers recently for the ultimate Barbie Bungee Challenge!

The mission? Give Barbie the thrill of a lifetime from a high platform—getting her as close to the ground as possible without a crash landing.

How the math came to life:
Collect the Data: Teams recorded how far Barbie dropped using a small number of rubber bands.
Make a Scatter Plot: Students plotted their coordinates to visualize the rubber band stretch.
Draw a Line of Best Fit: Teams analyzed the trend to map out a clear linear relationship.
Create Slope-Intercept Equations: Using (y = mx + b), students calculated the exact slope and y-intercept based on their line.

The Big Prediction: Everyone used their equations to calculate the exact number of rubber bands needed for the final high drop!
