Before coming to Symbol Training Institute, Sebastian was doing delivery work, picking up gigs whenever he could, and facing the uncertainty of unstable housing. Looking for a more stable future, he enrolled in the CNC program to build hands-on manufacturing skills and create a stronger path forward. His training was funded through a Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership grant in partnership with E&ES.

During his training, Sebastian quickly developed strong attention to detail through CNC operation, print reading, and part inspection. He shared that Symbol gave him the confidence to put his name on an inspection sheet knowing his work was accurate and done right.

Today, Sebastian is working at Kreher Steel Company in Melrose Park, where he has begun a stable career in manufacturing. What once felt uncertain has been replaced with consistency and stability. He shared that he no longer worries about having a safe place to stay during the winter and is now able to support himself and keep food on the table.

When asked what he would tell his “before training” self, Sebastian said, “I’d say that stable income and a place to stay aren’t pipe dreams.” Outside of work, Sebastian continues to pursue his passion for American folk music and old-time banjo playing—interests he has carried throughout his journey.
