Interesting study. The authors used an experimental approach to see who would be preferred for open faculty positions. The found that "Contrary to prevailing assumptions, men and women faculty members from all four fields preferred female applicants 2:1 over identically qualified males with matching lifestyles (single, married, divorced), with the exception of male economists, who showed no gender preference."

based upon a simulation but the results are still interesting. A shift to a focus on skills instead of college attainment. Many open jobs now with an associate degree in a STEM field but it is also those jobs that are most vulnerable when a recession hits and are slower to recover (particularly in the last recession) when compared to those with a B.S. Worth a read.

The potential future of work? Is it possible for 47% of all jobs to be taken over by robots? In our group we are teaching youth to program robots to care for plants... in China there are robotically ran McDonalds, etc.... possibly?

Nice, nice article on the value of out-of-school time and the value of the time (if used well). Certainly has implications around career discernment, particularly if as a society, we really value supporting and advancing residents from lower-income families to be economically mobile (and often STEM is a gatekeeper to economic mobility).

I think part of the issue that is consistently missed in this studies that examine the stem workforce problem is that people with STEM skills have many more opportunities that become available to them. It is still true that more engineers become entrepreneurs than people with MBA degrees.

While employers argue that there are not enough workers with technical skills, most prior research has found little evidence that such workers are in short supply.
