They tell you almost nobody actually carries. That permitless carry is a fringe experiment.

There are 33.6 million Americans carrying a handgun in public today. Five years ago that number was 20.7 million. Nearly 13 million more people in five years, a 62% increase.

And even that is a conservative count. It only includes permit holders who say they carry at least sometimes, which means that in permitless carry states, people who lawfully carry without ever getting a permit are not counted at all. The real number is higher.

70% of gun owners carry in at least some circumstances. Yet 36% say there has been a time when they wanted to carry for self-defense and local laws stopped them.

Just after midnight in Akron, Ohio, a DoorDash driver had bullets coming through his windshield and still managed to make two decisions that likely saved both his life and his freedom. One came before a single shot was fired. The other came after the shooting stopped. Together, they’re one of the clearest real-world examples of what we call a “defensive-only” mindset.

Most concealed carriers picture the middle of the fight: drawing, shooting, hitting. The defensive-only mindset is about the edges refusing to let ego drag you into a fight you could walk away from, and refusing to chase “justice” once the immediate threat is over. In the Akron case, the driver chose not to escalate road rage. Then, after returning fire to stop an active deadly threat, he moved to safety and called police instead of pursuing or re-engaging. That discipline is why he’s not facing charges as of this writing.
