Just after midnight in Akron, Ohio, a DoorDash driver had bullets coming through his windshield and still managed to make two decisions that likely saved both his life and his freedom. One came before a single shot was fired. The other came after the shooting stopped. Together, they’re one of the clearest real-world examples of what we call a “defensive-only” mindset.

Most concealed carriers picture the middle of the fight: drawing, shooting, hitting. The defensive-only mindset is about the edges refusing to let ego drag you into a fight you could walk away from, and refusing to chase “justice” once the immediate threat is over. In the Akron case, the driver chose not to escalate road rage. Then, after returning fire to stop an active deadly threat, he moved to safety and called police instead of pursuing or re-engaging. That discipline is why he’s not facing charges as of this writing.

In this new article, we break down: how “defensive-only” differs from trying to “bring a bad guy to justice,” the two most common failures (ego before the fight, justice-seeking after), and the specific behaviors that show up in truly defensive-minded carriers like letting a fleeing threat go, disengaging the moment you safely can, and walking away from pointless confrontations. We also share practical ways to build this mindset now: studying DGUs where post-shooting actions ruined a good case, taking solid self-defense law training, running mental scenarios, and auditing your own ego from the last week.

If you carry a gun to protect yourself and the people you love, this piece is worth your time. It’s the first in a six-part series on the concealed carry mindset, and it may change how you think about “winning” a fight.
