WATCHMAN KOOTEEYAAS - Carver Will Peterson stands in front of one of two 10-foot Watchman Kooteeyaas (totems) he carved over a year-and-a-half period, during an unveiling ceremony Thursday attended by more than 250 people at the Alaska Department of Public Safety Training Academy. Speakers at the event, which was emceed by X̱’unei Lance Twitchell of the University of Alaska Southeast, included Alaska Department of Public Safety Commissioner James Cockrell; James Hoelscher, VPSO program director; Ch'aa Yaa Eesh Richard Peterson, Tlingit and Haida president; L’eiwtú Éesh Herman Davis, L’uknax.adí Coho Clan leader; John A. Young III, Chookaneidi speaker; and carver Will Peterson. In his remarks, Peterson told of the history of the Watchman Kooteeyaas and how it fits in with Sitka's history of law enforcement and the mission of the training academy.
