One of the reasons I like making mushrooms so much is that they’re a little more forgiving.

I still want them to be accurate, but mushrooms are weird. They grow crooked, lopsided, curled up, stretched out and sometimes just plain strange. So there’s a little more room to go off script and just have fun with them.

Yesterday I worked on six different ones. I got the basic shapes felted and their wood mounts ready, which means right now I have a table full of very pale mushrooms. 😂

Today I get to add color and start making them look a little less ghostly and a lot more like the mushrooms they're supposed to be.

I’m planning to mount each one on its own wood slice when they're finished. I think these are going to be pretty fun.

This is what appeared on my felting table this morning.

I’m still working on the Wood Duck for this month’s course, but I had an idea for this little folk art cat and needed to try it. She’s only about 4 inches tall, with a crescent moon and a few little stars on her back.

Now I’m wondering if she should become a course too.

What do you think? Would you make this one?

I don’t normally show up here on a Saturday, but today gets an exception.

The $79 annual Rustic Fiber Academy special ends tonight.

That’s a full year of the Academy, over 170 needle felting courses, everything from quick beginner projects to the ridiculously detailed things I somehow keep talking myself into making.

A little duck before a much bigger duck.

I’ve been working on this mini version this past week while I prep for October’s new course. Think wool decoy duck, but folk art embellished.

This little guy is my chance to play with the idea on a smaller scale before I go much bigger. The final course project will be a wood duck, and I have some fun ideas for where I want to take it.

October is going to be a good month inside the Rustic Fiber Academy, and if you’ve been thinking about joining, the All Courses annual membership is $79 through October 3rd. You can also start with a two-week free trial to look around, try some courses and see if the Academy is a good fit for you.
