Foundational Kendo strikes are forward moving. However, there are backward (hiki) strikes that are most often used when leaving tsubazeriai.

Hiki-men is a backward strike, striking the head (men) while moving back. The sword leads the way, with it raised above the attacker's head, pointing backward, after striking the men. Fumikomi still happens at the time of the strike.

Proper grip goes a long way when striking. Especially if you're right handed, it might seem counterintuitive to use your left hand more than your right.
👉The right hand is the pivot point and guide for aiming, remaining fairly stationary.
👈 The left hand does the moving and is the power behind the strike.

Gripping too tightly with either hand, or overusing the right, will result in poor aim and a bad strike.

The epee is the largest and heaviest of the three weapons (epee, sabre, foil) used in fencing.🤺
There are no rules regarding priority and a lack of right of way with epee. The entire body is a valid target area, as shown in red.

Proper posture helps us in all areas of life, including Kendo. Utilizing the right muscles and having mind + muscle connections helps with proper form and preventing injury.

✔ Keep your head up and chin neutral
✔ Pull your shoulders back slightly to stand straight, but don't tense them up to your ears
✔ Tighten your core muscles, particularly your abs and glutes!
✔ Maintain balance between both feet, with legs strong and the left leg bent, ready for movement

"Debana" requires anticipating your opponent's intent to attack, and attacking them right before they attack you.
This graphic demonstrates the proper foot and sword timing for a debana men.
