Over 100 students from 12 high schools attended Southeast Technical College’s Career Exploration Day on May 13, where they participated in a variety of hands-on activities across campus.

Rick Warkenthien, an instructor in the Media Design program, guided a small group through the process of creating a professional ad campaign for Mrs. Meyers Hand Lotion — from concept development to final layout.

To kick off the project, students used AI to generate rough sketch ideas for the advertisement. The group discussed how AI can be a valuable tool for planning, research and inspiration, while also exploring its limitations, including legality concerns, lack of originality, image quality issues and limited editing capabilities.

Participants then moved into the photography studio to learn about industry-standard cameras, lighting equipment and techniques used to capture professional product photography. Working in teams, they took turns photographing the lotion bottle as it splashed into a water tank, with each participant getting three chances to capture the perfect shot.

Back in the classroom, students reviewed and evaluated the images, made quick edits to refine the final photo, and placed it into a finished ad layout with text and design elements.

The activity gave students a real-world look at the creative process behind advertising, photography, and graphic design while introducing them to the technology and tools used in the industry today.
