I am thrilled to announce that we have enrolled our first student to join us at The Pelican School this fall! We can't wait to share our time and learning with a fellow student whose family's values align so closely with our own!

Due to some discernment on my part, I have decided to adjust our schedule one FINAL time. This adjustment has been made to better balance school time and family time.

The Pelican School offers a genuine homeschool experience to children whose parents would like this option, but are unable to provide it themselves due to schedule, work, or personality conflicts.

It is an excellent schooling option for families looking to reduce the time their children spend in class and to preserve their freedom to travel, connect, and remain the primary influence in their children's lives.

Our schedule for the 2025/26 school year will be as follows:
Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays 9am-12pm

Our program is fully comprehensive, which means there is no required supplementation at home. We cover Language Arts, Math, Science, the Arts, and Social Studies, with a special emphasis on nature and great literature.

Easy as 1, 2, 3.......(4)

We keep our enrollment process easy, because families don't need to add any more stress to their lives.

1. Submit our Student Application: be as thorough as possible! This is our first impression of you and your child! We want to know what makes your child unique and how they learn.

2. Submit a Reference Form: have an unrelated adult who knows your child well fill out our brief reference form. This gives us the perspective of someone who knows your child in a nonfamilial manner, who may provide different insight into his/her learning strengths and preferences.

3. Family Interview: this can be done in a one or two-step process. Some parents prefer to meet without their child for an initial interview, and follow up with an interview including their child. During the interview, families have the opportunity to tour the classroom and ask any questions they may have. This is also our opportunity to determine whether The Pelican School is the right fit for the applying student.

4. Acceptance to The Pelican School!
Upon a final review, and after all necessary forms have been submitted, families will be notified on the acceptance or denial of their application. Upon the student's acceptance, families can expect to sign an enrollment contract and submit the enrollment fee to hold their child's spot for the upcoming school year.

Have you ever wondered what your child's day might look like at The Pelican School? Wonder no more! Here is an example of how we might approach a standard day of learning. Our Core Studies include language arts, math, a current read aloud book with discussion, and (weather permitting) outdoor recreation. While this daily routine serves as a guide, we also allow flexibility in order to maximize our time together.

What does "maximizing" our time mean? In the state of South Dakota, language arts and math are the two non-negotiable subjects required of a learner. We believe that if you can read, write and math "well", you have the tools to learn anything! The real challenge comes in cultivating young minds that believe learning isn't about memorization and assessments, but about pursuing truth and knowledge.

We take every opportunity to build up our students' character and confidence in addition to supporting them in their academic goals. This may mean that, while we complete our Core Studies every day, we might take extra time outside if the weather is especially beautiful, or spend extra time during our read aloud session if discussion is particularly thought-provoking, or spend our entire afternoon working on a Social Studies experiment because it's just that interesting!

This is what choosing an alternative education looks like! It's taking back our students' roles as explorers and "little scientists" by allowing them the space and time to delve deep into the wonder they are so innately blessed with. At The Pelican School, our goal is to raise up learners who are confident in their ability to learn anything they set their minds to, and to instill in them a desire for truth and knowledge.

Hello! It's been a while since I've posted to our social media, and I am THRILLED to share some very exciting developments for The Pelican School!

A bit about our recent hiatus: our family decided toward the end of last year to take some months of deep discernment. As a result, we closed enrollments to The Pelican School for this school year last October in order to focus on growing my husband's home improvements business. As that business has begun to grow, we've had the privilege of receiving an abundance of blessings and peace in our family life. God is SO good!

As we have continued to reflect on our family's future, my heart has consistently come back to The Pelican School. I feel that I am being called to open enrollments for next school year and see where God takes us! We are very excited to be changing up the format and reducing the tuition of our program to make the school more accessible to those amazing, like-minded families that would like to join us on our endeavor to pursue an education that inspires the mind, heart and soul in equal measures!
