Maggie Moeller, art teacher at JFK and Horace Mann Elementary, received a Public School Proud Grant for “Art in the Specialized Classroom.” She will use $1,017.51 to purchase textured rubber plates and brushes, design rollers, and mold and play sensory sand kits. When working with students with special needs, it is crucial to have an assortment of materials to use that keep them engaged and strengthen fine motor skills. Research has shown that students with significant disabilities learn best through a multisensory approach, and these materials will ensure their success in the art room. Thank you, Anthony Pizer - Thrivent Financial, for investing in this grant program for teachers!

Update: Zoe from Jane Addams Elementary School has been selected as Artsonia's 4th-6th "ARTIST OF THE WEEK" for February 14 - February 20. During the contest, Zoe received 950 votes from website visitors! Be sure to check the Artsonia homepage at www.artsonia.com where you will see Zoe’s artwork featured for the next few days.
Thank you to everyone who voted!
One of our very own students, Zoe in 5th grade, is a finalist to be Artsonia's artist of the week!
Her artwork is from our Figure Drawing lesson, where students chose a black and white photo of a person, and recreated it using ovals to get the basic proportions, then added details like hair and clothes, and finally skin tone and color. We talked about value and shading and creating skin tones that weren't flat "peach" or "brown" but instead were mixed using a variety of colors.
We were a o impressed with how well fourth and fifth graders did on this assignment! They chose from people like Lebron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Anna Pavlova.
So here's where you come in... Go to this link and vote for Zoe's art before Saturday the 13th. Voting is limited to one vote per day per computer.
Congrats on this recognition Zoe!
