Lincoln HS JAG

Some of the LHS JAG officers took a road trip this week to Pierre, SD to observe our state government in legislative session and engage with public leaders.

On Wednesday, we had an after hours tour of the South Dakota State Capitol, thanks to an amazing tour guide - Kristie Fiegen.

On Thursday morning, we sat in on some committee meetings, visited the Supreme Court Courtroom and State Library, and met with SD Secretary of Education Dr. Graves.

On Thursday afternoon , Chief Justice Steven R. Jensen, Sixth Circuit Court Judge M. Bridget Mayer, State Court Administrator Greg Sattizahn and Attorney and Lobbyist Brett Koenecke of the South Dakota Unified Judicial System spoke with us about careers in the judicial system and had us participate in a mock trial centered around a National Hockey League incident between Marty McSorley of the Boston Bruins and Donald Brashear of the Vancouver Canucks.

To end the day, the JAG students were formally recognized on the House and Senate floors, highlighting the program and celebrating the students’ participation in the legislative process.

We had a little bonding time in the hotel Wednesday evening. The students became the teachers (and were highly entertained) helping their Specialist, Ms. Engelland, apply her very first facial mask. 🤣

We’ve had a busy couple of weeks! First we helped out at Terry Redlin Elementary with their Color Fun Run, and then last week the leadership team headed to the Black Hills for the JAG SD leadership conference. We also visited Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore, and had an amazing experience at the Sanford Underground Research Facility.

Happy Monday! Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6th—May 10th, and the Education Foundation has partnered with Oh My Cupcakes! to surprise 25 Sioux Falls School District educators with a half dozen cupcakes each! To nominate, please comment on this post with the teacher’s first and last name and their school. We’d also love to know why you’re recognizing this individual. The contest ends Sunday, April 28th at midnight. We will randomly select 25 winners to receive “Apple of My Eye” cupcakes that were created by the cupcake ninjas to celebrate educators who are going above and beyond. The “Apple of My Eye” cupcake is a signature vanilla bean cake with a baked apple filling, topped with delicious cream cheese and a pool of salted caramel in the center. During Teacher Appreciation Week, this cupcake will also be available at both Oh My Cupcakes! locations, and they will donate a portion of each cupcake sold back to the Education Foundation! It’s a win-win, and we can’t wait to celebrate the incredible teachers we have in the Sioux Falls School District with this sweet treat!

Lincoln JAG students are taking a stand to support the Farm Bill to fight food insecurity as they prepare to compete at the state level in March. They packed 338 food boxes for Feeding South Dakota last week! Join the movement and buy a Valentine Gram for an LHS student. All proceeds are donated to Feeding South Dakota.

LHS JAG had a wonderful fall semester! We visited incredible career fairs at Mitchell Tech and Lake Area Tech. We brought awareness to Orange Shirt Day alongside members of the SFSD School Board and our Fall Leadership team attended the JAG-SD Leadership Development Conference in Spearfish, SD.

Spring Semester with LHS JAG has been an absolute riot! A successful bake sale! Visits to Dakota State, Mitchell Tech and SDSU! Career tours with Marmen Electric and Legacy Aviation in Tea... and more in the last 7 weeks of school!
