95% of the time we (Leo) are second to mount the gun. We are starting in last place in a race for our life. If 99.9% of use of force incidents do not involve armed opposition, what does the remaining .1% look like? Are you winning when bullets start flying? The current statistics state that law enforcement on average sucks at winning armed engagements with active opposition. But, leadership thinks that because it only happens .05% of our use of force incidents that we are winning. When in reality you are being hit half of the time someone is actively shooting at you. That is a failure. We have to start training based on current statistics. And that means we are going to have to shoot more, lift more, run more, and be more. If you can’t do that….then get out.

Being a dedicated police sniper means finding unconventional ways to be relevant to the operation. Whether you make a hide out of a hospital gurney, the back seat of a car, a pile of garbage, a snow bank, the shoulder of a teammate, or in a tree……find a way, or make one.

June is men’s mental health awareness month. It’s important to remember that this is just a job. In a world full of back stabbing admin, tier 1 wannabe do******gs, weak supervisors, lazy coworkers, and really bad dudes who try to kill you it’s important to recognize the effect this can have on your health. This job will take until you have nothing left.

This guy is one of my old teammates. He’s a full time sniper on a part time team, and a solid dude. In 2024 he took an advanced sniper course with us. A short time later he deployed the techniques we taught and saved a life. Now, a sergeant, deputy of the year, and law enforcement officer of the year, this man has deployed those same techniques competing at the ASA’s national sniper challenge. Our curriculum works because it has been forged from the fires of operational success and failure.
