Your Yard and Iowa’s Water: Small Steps That Make a Difference
When we mow the lawn or set the sprinkler, we often overlook the local stream. However, rainwater that runs off our yards picks up debris and carries it straight to the nearest storm drain, bypassing treatment and flowing into a creek or river. Our choices in our own yards have a significant impact on Iowa’s water quality, and small changes can add up when neighbors join forces.
Grass clippings are a great place to start. They may seem harmless, but when they wash into a storm drain, they feed algae growth that depletes oxygen levels and harms aquatic life. After mowing, sweep or blow clippings back onto the lawn, where they naturally decompose and act as free fertilizer.
Lawn chemicals are another major concern. Iowa soils already have sufficient phosphorus, so adding more usually results in excess phosphorus entering the storm drain. A soil test is the simplest way to determine your lawn’s specific needs. When applying fertilizer or w**d killer, always follow the label instructions, avoid applying before heavy rain, and sweep any product off sidewalks and driveways back onto the grass.
Watering practices also play a crucial role. Most established lawns require about an inch of water per week, including rainfall. Overwatering or watering hard surfaces directs water and any chemicals onto the storm drain. During dry periods, allowing your lawn to go dormant is an option that will revive it when the rain returns.
Downspouts are an easy fix that often goes unnoticed. If yours directs water onto a driveway or sidewalk, it heads straight for the storm drain. Pointing them toward a lawn, garden, or rain barrel allows the water to soak in where it falls.
Native plants are worth considering! 🌱 They have deep roots that stabilize the soil, absorb rainwater and require minimal watering or fertilization once established. Even a small native bed can make a significant difference and attract pollinators. 🦋 🐝 🐦
Remember, every yard is part of a watershed, and every storm drain leads to a stream. By leaving clippings on the lawn, reducing fertilizer use, minimizing watering and planting native plants, we can contribute to cleaner water in our rivers.
