If you’re feeling the mid winter blues, know you are not alone! It might be hard to find the motivation to do the things you need to do- like writing or revising that college application personal statement. If you or someone you know needs a little accountability, I can be that! As a writing tutor I can help see the process through from start to finish. I can support meeting deadlines and help avoid ineffective habits that lead to nowhere. Tip #1: break a large project into 3 chunks, and give each a due date. Put them in your calendar. Set a reminder alarm. Share them with people who can help you be accountable.

Every day, write something. A journal. A memory. The start of a story. A letter to someone you love. Your opinion about issues. Add a paragraph to that scholarship essay. Rewrite a conversation or conflict the way you wish it had gone.

Writing doesn’t have to be a 5 paragraph academic paper. Simply getting into the habit of expressing your ideas in writing helps you become a better, more fluent, more competent writer.

Too many students go through school with the mindset that they aren’t good writers. Maybe they received a bad score on an assignment. Maybe they just have never felt enjoyment during the writing process. As a writing teacher and tutor, I know how important it is for students to get feedback on what they are doing well, as well as how they can improve. I make it a point to give positive feedback and praise what students do well. I try to build their confidence as well as their skill set.
