Right here is one of the many reasons I made the transition to move Excel and become an administrator is I have the opportunity to invest in many more teachers and students lives!

We had the opportunity to attend
Fundations training yesterday! We are well on our way to doing what is best for EVERY child when it comes to learning to read!

Thankful for these wonderful ladies who get just as excited as I do when learning even more about science of reading and systematic phonics.

The countdown to school starting has begun! đź’š

Today our preschool - 2 teachers traveled to Denver for a training!

Coming up next a systematic phonics program in K-2! Fundations!

Learning how to teach kiddos to read is so important!

Brilliant blog post!

Fountas and Pinnell, as well as other balanced literacy programs, places a great deal of emphasis on this guided approach to reading and group work because, fundamentally, they see reading as a social activity, rather than an individual’s ability to decode text, something that happens in the confi...

In case you missed it, the dyslexia bill was signed into Iowa law by Governor Reynolds yesterday! Our graphic summarizes the components of the law. We encourage all who have interest to read the law, as more details are there, including timelines: https://tinyurl.com/yctwuuqy

We have been told by the Iowa Department of Education that they will be putting together the dyslexia board and working on a position description for their dyslexia specialist.

We have heard from many teachers who want to get the endorsement! That will take time. The Board of Educational Examiners will need to write the regulations that govern the endorsement. And unfortunately, the Iowa Reading Research Center did not receive the additional funding required to develop the content and coursework. You can bet we will be going after that next year.

Iowans, thank you for your support and advocacy throughout this legislative session! Although there is more work to do, these are steps in the right direction.

Today, Wednesday, June 17, Gov. Reynolds signed the following bills into law: HF717: an act concerning appeal rights relating to veterans preference. HF2220: an act relating to the definition of young adult for purposes of participation in the preparation for adult living program.

Last week was a good week for dyslexia legislation in Iowa! A new dyslexia bill, SF 2356, was approved unanimously by both the Iowa House and Senate. The bill now goes to Governor Reynolds, who has until July 13th to sign it into law. Thank you to all Iowans who came to the Capitol and contacted their legislators to advocate for this bill! Your voices made a big impact!

We know there is a lot of excitement about this bill and many questions too. The best way to understand what the bill requires and when things will happen is to read the bill! It covers many things, including timelines: https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislation/BillBook?ga=88&ba=sf2356

Please keep in mind that this bill provides a framework for these changes to happen, and many of the details will be decided further down the road. We plan to publish an FAQ document that will given more details about the bill, so stay tuned for that!
