What's the Difference Between Tang and Conventional Commutators?

Tang and conventional commutators are two common types of commutators used in brushed motors. Each has its own advantages depending on the application.

Conventional Commutator:
- Stronger wire connections
- Better suited for high vibration and high RPM applications
- Typically more expensive due to additional manual assembly

Tang Commutator:
- Wire connections can be made during the winding process
- Typically lower manufacturing costs
- Improved designs can handle more demanding applications

Agriculture has always been a part of who we are.

It all started on a farm in northwest Iowa, where a family built a wind charger to charge the battery used to power their farm radio. As the company grew, it expanded into motors and farm generators in the 1950s.

Today, ag is still a big part of what we do. From building motors and gearmotors used in ag equipment to being located right in the middle of an agricultural community, agriculture continues to play an important role at Groschopp.

Gearmotor Basics: Right Angle Worm Reducers

Right angle worm gearboxes are used in a lot of different applications. They are a good option when you need a 90-degree output or a compact design.

Here are a few things to know:
• Handles overhung loads well
• Our 30:1 ratios and higher can provide non-back-drivability
• Typically quieter than other gearbox types
• Best suited for intermittent duty applications

Built for High-Speed Performance

A manufacturer came to Groschopp looking for a compact, durable motor solution for a portable pump application.

Some challenges included:
• Reaching 11,000 RPM with strong torque output
• Fitting within a compact portable design
• Managing heat in demanding operating conditions
• Integrating a removable cast metal housing

Groschopp developed a two-pole universal motor with custom armature windings to meet the speed and torque requirements. The motor also included a custom machined housing designed for the application.
