The power of Horizons is often best understood through the eyes of the families and advocates who experience its impact firsthand. 💙

Meet Emily R., a Horizons advocate who has helped four girls access Horizons at The Ethel Walker School program through her commitment to families in the greater Hartford community.

Through her years in public education and her work as a volunteer refugee advocate, Emily has connected with families building new lives in the Hartford area. She recognized that many children, especially new English language learners, may not have access to summer academic support and enrichment.

In her words:
“All of the girls that I know who have attended Horizons thought the program was fantastic! They loved their teachers, made new friends, enjoyed the community lunches, the field trips, and so much more, and they look forward to returning to Horizons each summer.”

Emily has also witnessed the confidence that grows throughout the summer:

“I have seen firsthand how they become more confident and learn to take appropriate risks.”

This is the power of Horizons and the power of a community that believes every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

We’re grateful for the guardians, advocates, donors, volunteers, and partners who help make Horizons possible. Your support opens doors and creates possibilities. 💙

Week 5 was all about celebrating our students and everything they’ve accomplished this summer! 💙☀️

From welcoming returning families and new friends to our Student Showcase, to testing our engineering skills during the STEAM Boat Launch, our girls had so many opportunities to shine. We wrapped up the week with unforgettable adventures at Burr Pond, Stratton Brook, and West Hill Lake, where students paddled with Main Stream Canoes & Kayaks and put their swimming, water safety, teamwork, and confidence into action.

What an incredible way to celebrate a summer of learning, growth, and fun. We couldn’t be prouder of our Horizons girls! 🌊🚣‍♀️✨

Week 4 is in the books! 💙✨

From exploring UCONN’s campus to celebrating culture, our students spent the week learning, creating, and growing together.

Our 5th-8th graders wrapped up their week with a visit to UCONN, where they toured campus, enjoyed lunch at the Student Union, learned from the UConn Dept. of Animal Science, and finished the day at the famous UConn Dairy Bar !

Our 1sr graders celebrated Culture Day, welcoming families to share foods and traditions that represent their cultures, a beautiful reminder that our diversity makes our community stronger!

In STEAM, students put their problem-solving skills to the test with coding activities, engineered egg-drop designs, and put the finishing touches on their boats in preparation for the big boat race this week.

Afternoon enrichment kept students engaged with chess, crochet, gardening, dance, and a few sweet treats along the way! 🍦

Every week at Horizons at The Ethel Walker School is filled with opportunities to discover new interests, build confidence, and create lasting memories. We can’t wait to see what the final weeks have in store!

💙 Every child deserves the chance to feel confident in the water.

A huge THANK YOU to Step Into Swim and Stewie the Duck Swim School for their incredible $5,000 grant supporting Horizons at The Ethel Walker School’s swim program! 🏊‍♀️

For many of our students, learning to swim is about so much more than fun, it’s about building confidence, staying safe, and discovering new opportunities. Nearly half of our new students arrive unable to swim or feeling nervous around water.

With the help of this grant, every student receives 3 swim lessons each week throughout our six-week summer program, building lifesaving water safety skills and confidence that will last a lifetime.

And then comes the best part! 🌊 From exploring Burr Pond and Stratton Brook to kayaking the Farmington River with Main Stream Canoe & Kayak LLC, our students get to celebrate their progress with unforgettable outdoor adventures.

Thank you for investing in our students, their safety, and their futures. Together, we’re creating stronger, safer swimmers one splash at a time. 💦🫧💙
