Lacuna Day 1️⃣! This year we celebrate the 50th (!) anniversary of the Lacuna program, first introduced at Walker's in 1972. As a way of recognizing this milestone, we are offering 14 Lacunas led by students for students! These self-selected capabilities have been learned this fall, and are now offered as a way of exhibiting the mastery attained. A few pictured: learning the Python programming language, ukulele, documenting ghost stories, and robotics.

Steelcase Active Learning Center in action: Dr. Emma Mitchell's Honors Physics 9 students have been working on a project that culminated this afternoon. Earlier this week, the class was divided into groups, and each group was given the challenge of predicting the collision position and time of two battery-powered toy cars. They had a short amount of time to take any necessary laboratory measurements of the cars, and then the cars were taken away while the groups made their predictions using four different methods: using a motion diagram on a number line, using a position vs. time graph, using functions that they programmed using the Pyret coding language, and using algebra. 🚗

Today, Dr. Chris Semk took his French classes to the Bell Library Art Gallery to engage with the art of , a French-speaking artist born and raised in Togo. Advanced French students analyzed Foyer's artwork and discussed wrapping as a cultural practice - what kinds of things do we wrap and why? What is hidden and what is revealed? French 3 students learned about Togo and African wax prints, briefly talked about wrapping, and then made their own wrapped objects using sticks and yarn. Finally, Dr. Semk's French 1A class has been working with color and clothing vocabulary, so the class described Foyer's art in simple terms and then students made their own wrapped objects which they then presented at the end of class using level-appropriate French: what colors they used and what it represents to them. It was a nice change of pace for all three classes. The students found the act of wrapping therapeutic and came up with some really wonderful, meaningful pieces of artwork.
